This historical novel follows the life of Charles Ashe, a British Army officer who returns home after being wounded in the Napoleonic Wars, he inherits the family estate after his father’s demise, he navigates personal loss, love, and the responsibilities of leadership in early 19th century England. The story explores his relationships with family, friends, and staff, his romance and eventual marriage to Annabelle, also his efforts to modernise his estate, while supporting his community. After Napoleon escapes from Elba, he returns to the army. The narrative is rich with period detail, social commentary and themes of loyalty, honour, and personal growth, culminating in Charles return from war, the continued expansion of his estate, building a hopeful future for his family while dealing with the traumas of war.
