About The Author

Michael Berkeley

Michael Berkeley

Michael has been taking photographs for most of his life.  His Father was an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and many happy hours were spent with him in his darkroom when he was growing up.  His father was his inspiration.

Michael has been taking photographs more seriously since Autumn 2016 and he now specialises in photographing sport and music, but also enjoy travel and street photography.  Based near Salisbury, he is one of the house photographers at The Joiners music venue in Southampton, and have photographed regularly for Hampshire Cricket Club, Salisbury Football Club and Druids Lodge Polo Club. He has photographed almost 40 different sports and always looking for new opportunities.

For many years Michael has been a Nikon DSLR user, but in 2020 he sold all his Nikon kit and changed to Sony mirrorless. He now uses two Sony A9IIs and his lenses are the Sony 24–70mm f/2.8 GM II; 70–200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II; 200–600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS; and 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS. For more about his move to Sony, read his article on “Defecting from Nikon to Sony”.

Michael is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS); and, while no longer a member, has been an Associate of both the Society of International School & Events Photographers (ASISEP) and the Society of International Sport & Leisure Photographers (ASISLP).

Polo is the sport of kings, playboys and millionaires – or is it?

Polo King of Sports addresses some of the myths about the sport and portrays in words and images the world of low-goal polo.  It is a world populated by obsessive people addicted to their sport and united by a shared love of horses.

The book describes what happens before, during and after a game, providing a behind-the-scenes insight into the sport.  It shows not just the glamorous spectacle of the polo action but also celebrates the work of the grooms and the other officials who make the game happen.

It describes the thriving world of military polo, as well as the closely related and exciting sport of arena polo.

The stars of the show are the polo ponies themselves, supreme athletes and magnificent animals.  There are few finer sights than polo ponies at full speed, side by side, as the players compete for the ball.

The book provides an insight into a world of exciting sporting action and adrenaline-fuelled passion.
